Orangetheory Franchisee While Working in Tech

We’ve talked about franchises on the show before, but this time we’re talking about the whole process - from purchasing to running to selling - with someone who has done this in the fitness franchise space.

Alex Caputo has worked in a variety of Technical Sales roles and found that he was also drawn to entrepreneurship.  Because he was passionate about fitness, he got started with Orangetheory fitness franchises which he successfully sold and transitioned into car washes.

Alex and I talk about how his wife introduced him to Orangetheory and why they decided to open their own franchise. He shares some advice about knowing your strengths and weaknesses as business partners and the pros and cons of owning and operating this kind of franchise. And Alex and I discuss the reasons they sold their franchises even though they were still doing really well.

Alex will be back on next week’s episode to talk about where his entrepreneurial journey has taken him after selling these franchises, so be sure to tune back in next week!

In this episode, we’re discussing…

  • Why Alex and his wife decided buying an Orangetheory franchise would be their next business move.

  • What the setup process was like when they bought their first Orangetheory franchise.

  • Pros and cons of running this kind of franchise.

  • The key challenges of owning a franchise when you are a semi-absentee owner and still working a full-time job in tech.

  • How Alex and his wife decided to sell their franchises.

Alex’s Top Tips:

  • If you can, own something you are passionate about – Alex and his wife are both passionate about fitness, so owning a business in this space gave them the extra fuel to take it to its maximum capacity. You won’t always be invested in businesses you love, but if you can be you will see benefits.

  • Identify your strengths - and your partner’s - with a third party - Alex and his wife bring complementary skillsets to the entrepreneurial table. If you can sit down with a third party to help you figure out who is good at what, you will be able to work from your strengths more easily.

  • Have an exit strategy – Alex and his wife weren’t exactly expecting to sell their franchises when they did, but after making some initial inquiries and getting great offers, they decided to sell pretty quickly. If you can have your next venture lined up before you exit, that’s even better!
